The report stated that some veterans received payments that ranged from $132 to $4,170 lower than expected and overpayments of $373 were also reported. The incorrect payments were confirmed in a report released by the VA Inspector General.

Here are additional steps you can take to correct or dispute inaccurate VA disability payments:

1. Notify the VA Debt Management Center 

The first step that veterans may take to dispute inaccurate disability payments is to contact the VA Debt Management Center and explain the error in the payments. Veterans may need to provide documents to support their claim and show the discrepancy.

2. File a Waiver

Veterans who are underpaid or overpaid may need to submit a waiver claim to correct the error or cancel any potential debt associated with overpayment. Veterans may need to explain the circumstances of the error in their claim and Department of Veterans Affairs officials will make a decision based on your waiver. 

3. File an Appeal

If the waiver is unsuccessful, veterans may have to file an appeal to correct the payment error. Appeals can be filed via three methods — a Supplemental Claim, Higher-Level Review, or a Board Appeal. Instructions to appeal any decision can be found in the decision notification letter and veterans may need specific forms for the different types of reviews.
