The Cost-of-Living Adjustment that is applied to VA disability compensation each year is based on the increases applied to social security benefits by the Social Security Administration (SSA) using the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI-W) in addition to inflation data from July – September. This financial increase is applied to many different programs — VA disability, TDIU, SMC, DIC, VA pension, and other VA benefits.

In the next year — the cost-of-living increase to veteran disability compensation is projected to be between 3.8% and 4.7% based on different evaluations. There are some sources that estimate an increase of 3.8%, and others that anticipate an even higher increase of 4.7% or higher. The official COLA will be announced in October 2026 — and no matter where the actual increase falls within that estimated range, it represents a significant increase over the 2.8% COLA that veterans saw in 2026
